Beyond Impressionism:
Masterpieces from the Musée d’Orsay

The National Museum of Korea (Director Kim Youngna) will be presenting the special exhibition, Beyond Impressionism: Masterpieces from the Musée d’Orsay on May 3. This exhibition examines the dramatic change in European art and life during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The exhibition is organized with the scientific collaboration and the exceptional loans of the Musée d’Orsay. Later works from artists such as Claude Monet and Henri Rousseau convey the domineering personalities and acute minds of these legendary artists. The exhibition features over 170 works of various media—including photography, sculpture, drawing, and crafts—all of which were specially selected from the renowned collection of the Musée d’Orsay.

Distinctive and colorful masterworks are displayed, ranging from the late impressionism, the Neo-Impressionist paintings that applied scientific optical theory, Paul Gaugauin and Pont-Aven School artists who left the modernized city for the primitive life, the unique and distinctive worlds of Vincent van Gogh and Paul Cézanne, and the Symbolist works representing the end-of-century sentiments. The collection, bringing together the workings of the nature, the primitive life and the world of dreams and the subconscious by bold colors and flat picture planes that have reached beyond the Impressionism, demonstrates the evolving of the modern art.

The exhibition will transport the visitors to the modern city of Paris in the nineteenth century. Drawings of architecture and photographs of the city renovations will visualize the making of Paris as we know it today, followed by portraits, drawings and art nouveau works that illustrates the Parisian life in the Belle Époque. The works that depict the Parisian streets or the various images of Tour d’Eiffel as the symbol of modernity, will also help to portray the different faces of modern Paris.
