From its very inception, mathematics and accounting played a fundamental role in Mesopotamian scribal culture. A complete system of weights combining the sexagesimal and decimal systems was established by the Late Uruk period, a version of which survived for millennia to come. Multiplication tables like this one would have been helpful tools for scribes performing everyday arithmetic.
