Uma

One of the Hindu goddesses symbolizing female qualities is Uma or Parvati, the wife of Shiva. Embodying both a loving mother and obedient wife, Uma is often depicted in Hindu sculptures with a tantalizing duality, combining purity and sensuality. This Angkor sculpture, produced in the late twelfth or early thirteenth century, demonstrates the Bayon style, characterized by very lifelike qualities and lively facial expressions. This Uma statue conveys these features well, with the natural rendering of the big eyes, wide nose, and thick lips forming a subtle smile.
