This gilt-bronze outer chest – originally produced as a part of the sarira reliquary set enshrined in the Five-story Stone Pagoda in Wanggung-ri, Iksan, and discovered during the dismantling of the pagoda in 1965 – was used to hold the inner chest of gold sutra plaques. The treasure contained in the inner chest, which was in turn placed in this outer chest before being enshrined at the pagoda, included a set of nineteen gold plaques incised with passages from the Diamond Sutra.
