During the Joseon Period, all men were required to carry an identification plaque, the contents and quality of which varied depending on the status of the holder. This one, which belonged to Kim Hui (1729-1800), a civilian official of the 18th century, is called an apae (“ivory plaque”) as it is made of ivory. The Chinese characters inscribed in red on the plaque state that Kim Hui was born in the Giyu Year (1729) and that the plaque was made in the Gapjin Year (1784).
