Bamboo is one of the “Four Gentlemen” - the other three being the plum blossom, the orchid, and the chrysanthemum - that Joseon’s literati artists praised as symbols of noble character through their works of art. For these artists, bamboo, which remains perennially green, symbolized a noble Confucian scholar or a loyal subject. This ceramic wine bottle displays a delightfully simple body inspired by the shape of bamboo and is covered with clear blue glaze.
