A ‘rank badge’ was an embroidered patch that was attached to the front and back of the official robes of members of the royal family and government officials of the Joseon Dynasty. This one, embroidered with a twin tiger design, was worn by military officials. Originally, rank badges were only attached to the official robes of high-ranking officials, but they were adopted for the robes of all officials during the reign of King Yeonsangun.
