A ‘rank badge’ refers to an embroidered patch that was attached to the front and back of the official robes worn by members of the royal family and government officials of the Joseon Dynasty. This one, embroidered with a twin tiger design, was intended for military officials. The badges of high-ranking military officials were generally embroidered with two tigers, while those of low-ranking officials only had one. This ranking system was implemented until 1910.
