During the Joseon period, people who made important contributions during times of national crisis were officially designated as “gongsin” (功臣, meritorious subjects), and their names and achievements were documented in special records called “Gongsin Nokgwon”(功臣錄券). In return for their outstanding loyalty, the gongsin were given special titles, official posts, and economic and social prestige.
