This inkstone with lid has a standing mouth with curled lips and a sloped plane on which ink sticks were rubbed to make ink. Inkstones such as this one originated from the Southern Dynasties in ancient China, were introduced to Baekje, and later passed on to Japan where they enjoyed great popularity. Experts conjecture that this particular item was made between the late 6th and early 7th centuries.
