Confucianism stresses the importance of reverence for one’s ancestors, filial duty, and ritual propriety. Thus, two activities that were strongly emphasized throughout the Joseon period were memorial services and ancestral rites. This epitaph tablets record that Lady Gu acted admirably by consistently exerting herself to hold the proper memorial services for her deceased husband.
