In this portrait, Yi Gil-bo, a civil official of the late Joseon Period, is wearing an official hat, a waist belt, and a dark green ceremonial robe, to the front of which a rank badge embroidered with a twin crane design is attached. Judging by the subject’s robe, the portrait is presumed to have been painted after he rose to the position of Inspector General in 1763. The technique of chiaroscuro, the perspective-based technique, and the projection technique attempted in this piece all appear to have been rather unsuccessful. The facial expression is marked by a conservatism characteristic of line drawing of the early 18th century.
