The seventeenth-century court painter Kim Myeong-guk was skilled at landscapes and figure paintings, and he left several paintings of Taoist immortals. The two paintings on display offer a glimpse into Kim’s dynamic use of brushstrokes and skill at expressing human figures. A Quarrel between Go Players features two Taoist immortals arguing while playing go under a pine tree. In contrast to their serious quarrel, the attendant boy is gathering up the scattered go stones in a tranquil manner. Viewing a Waterfall describes two figures holding a conversation while observing a waterfall. The dynamic expression of the background contrasts with the rather calm mood of the figures. Playing go and viewing waterfalls were among the favorite motifs for literati painting throughout the Joseon dynasty since they reflected the noble tastes of the literati.
