This Kumari mask may have been worn by Newars of Nepal during a sacrificial rite. Kumari refers to a living goddess of Hinduism, and also means a “virgin” in Nepalese. The basic form of this mask is made by mixing clay with paper, and then overlaying several sheets of paper using paste before leaving them to dry in the desired form and painting them.
