This statue is more like a Buddhist stele. The folds of the robe are Y-shaped and the robe covers the right shoulder. The long drooping eyes and small mouth represent the ‘naturalized’ and localized sculpture style which prevailed during the late Unified Silla Period. The hand gesture of “the dispelling fear mudra” and the “granting compassion mudra” formed by holding the arms to the sides and stretching them at an oblique 45-degree angle was also commonly seen in gilt-bronze Buddhist statues of the late Unified Silla Period.
