This bodhisattva statue, originally discovered at the Hansongsa Temple site, was smuggled to Japan when Korea was under Japanese colonial rule, but was returned to Korea after the Korea-Japan Talks in 1965. The statue’s tall, tubular headdress and delightfully plump face with a benign smile are often compared with those of the bodhisattva statues at Woljeongsa and Sinboksa Temples, showing that the same style was widely adopted in the same area. These also show some of the characteristics of the Buddhist statues made during the early Goryeo Period.
