During the early Goryeo Period, several influential Seon schools, such as Wolgwangsa, Jeongtosa and Heungnyeonseonwon, expanded their influence to the middle reaches of the Hangang River with the support of the local gentry such as the Chungju Yu Clan. This stele was built to honor State Preceptor Hongbeop, who headed the Buddhist community in one of these Seon centers, Jeongtosa Temple, following his predecessor Buddhist Monk Beopgyeong. The stele is made with the same stone used for the stele erected to honor Master Wollang at Wolgwangsa Temple.
