Kim Su-cheol is a late-Joseon artist remembered for his landscape and flower paintings. Kim Jeong-hui (1786-1856), a renowned calligrapher, painter, and critic of the same period, praised Kim’s paintings for their expert arrangement and smooth brushstrokes. Kim’s works stand out from most contemporaneous paintings for their unique composition, concise brushstrokes, and use of translucent inks reminiscent of watercolors. Both of these paintings were executed on special Korean paper decorated with sparkling bits of gold.
