This painting features eight scenes, one pair for each of the four seasons. Each scene shows an asymmetrical composition, with most of the motifs occupying one side while the rest of the painting is relatively empty. The autumn landscape is particularly poetic, with a rider on a donkey accompanied by a boy, and birds soaring over the mountains in the distance Gold pigments were applied to silk that had been dipped in black ink.
