This painting depicts a delightful banquet hosted by Guo Ziyi (697-781), a legendary Chinese general who lived during the Tang Dynasty (618-907). Guo Ziyi played an instrumental role in quashing a rebellion led by An Lushan (c. 703-757). For this triumph he was conferred the title of King Fenyang. After his military service, Guo Ziyi enjoyed an idyllic retirement with a great number of grandchildren and no notable misfortunes. He was consequently immortalized in China as the paragon of wealth, happiness, and success. The scene of a joyous banquet by Guo Ziyi was a popular theme in late Joseon paintings, reflecting a yearning for prosperity and happiness.
