The Saddharmapundarika Sutra (The Lotus Sutra), a basic scripture for the Cheontae Order of Korean Buddhism, is based on the philosophy that anyone can become a Buddha. Along with the Avatamsaka Sutra (The Flower Garland Sutra), it has exerted the greatest influence on Buddhist philosophy in Korea, and is the most widely distributed of all Buddhist scriptures in Korea. It was translated into Chinese by an Indian monk named Kumarajiva during the later Qin Period of China, and was transcribed in silver on oak paper. The illustration that summarizes the contents of the sutra is omitted from this book, while the cover is decorated with a flower design in gold and silver colors. The exact publication date is unknown, but its overall style suggests that it was made during the 14th century.
