This Jija Chongtong gun was fired by manual ignition. It was the second largest gun after the Cheonja Chongtong of all those made during the Joseon Period. The incised inscription on the gun’s barrel states that it was made in 1557 (the 12th year of King Myeongjong’s reign). According to the relevant historical records, the gun could fire 200 iron balls called jorantan or iron arrows called janggunjeon in one shot, using approximately 0.7kg of gunpowder, and had an effective range of almost one kilometer.
