This colorful bowl and dish set was produced in Arita, Saga Prefecture of Japan, and then traded via the Imari port, which is why it is known as “Imari ware.” From the mid-Edo Period onward, Japan exported its ceramics, especially Imari ware, to Europe through the East India Company. This set was clearly made for export to Europe, because large bowls and dishes like this were not used much in Asia. The vibrant, colorful designs of plants and animals on the bowl and dish all correspond, one with another.
