This stone pagoda was originally erected at the Sahyeonsa Temple Site in Hongje-dong, Seoul, in 1045 (the 11th year of the reign of King Jeongjong of the Goryeo Dynasty), the year in which the temple itself was established. Its stable appearance, skillful carving technique, the use of a pedestal to support the body of each story, and the decorations on the walls are all characteristic elements of the stone pagodas produced during the early Goryeo Period.
