According to recent research, these gold ornaments are presumed to have been part of accessories attached to a hapi (a long sash embroidered in gold worn over the shoulders of a queen as part of a ceremonial robe). These ornaments portraying a snake wrapping its coils around the Black Tortoise, the guardian deity of the north, were made by hammering gold plate. The snake’s scales and the tortoise’s back are defined in fine detail with inlaid lines.
