Ewers were generally made in the shape of a gourd, but the six vertical lines engraved on the lid and body of this example cause it to additionally resemble an oriental melon. This style of ewer is also found among the porcelain of the Northern Song Dynasty of China. Unlike its Chinese counterparts, however, it exhibits the characteristic elegance of the Goryeo style and demonstrates the establishment of an aesthetic value of subtle curves. Each side of its lower body is engraved with peonies and flowering branches.
