At the top-right is a critique that was written by Gang Se-hwang (1712–1791) about this piece. Gang writes, ″Jo Yeong-seok′s work is the best in our country and figure paintings are Gwanahjae′s best, and this work is the best out of all of Gwanahjae′s (Jo Yeong-seok′s penname) drawings. I saw this picture several decades before, and I examine it again now.″
The composition and the brushwork are accentuated in this work. Although this picture was modeled after the painting style of Tang Yin, active during the Ming dynasty China, the image of the figure twisting the yarn gives the impression that it is similar to Yun Du-seo′s work, A Figure Making Straw Shoes. Jo′s talent for drawing expressions can be seen in the facial expression of the woman carrying a baby on her back. Even if this was indeed drawn as a genre painting, this work reveals Jo′s disposition to eliminate secular elements from the picture.
