This commentary was made by Buddhist Monk Chengguan on the Avatamsaka Sutra (The Flower Garland Sutra), translated into Chinese by Monk Banruo during the reign of Emperor Dezong (785-805) of the Tang Dynasty. “The King of Aspirations, by Samantabhadra Bodhisattva” is the most widely read part of the Avatamsaksa Sutra. Originally, the book was published as a prayer for the longevity of Choe Hang (?-1257) in 1256 (the 43rd year of the reign of King Gojong of the Goryeo Dynasty), and was reprinted in 1387 (the 13th year of King U’s reign). The postscript was written by Yi Saek (1328-1396), a civil official of the late Goryeo Period.
