This is an inkstone stand made in the late Edo Period of Japan. The maki-e technique, whereby gold and silver powder are sprinkled over lacquer, was employed in its making, while its patterns were modelled on the landscape of Sumiyoshi Shrine. The bridge to the shrine was drawn in the lower part, while the entrance to the shrine was drawn in the upper part in a smaller size to create a sense of perspective.
