Oryun Haengsildo (An Illustrated Guide to the Five Moral Imperatives) was published in 1797 (the 21st year of King Jeongjo’s reign) during the Joseon Period. It contains the acts of 150 people who set a good example in the five basic behaviors to be observed towards one’s parents, as well as towards the king, one’s husband, adults, and friends, along with woodblock prints made in Kim Hong-do’s customary painting style. It was intended to help ordinary people more easily understand the basic ethical virtues taught by Confucianism.
