This document, called a deungjang, was submitted by twenty-three Confucian scholars in a village to the local government, asking for a citation of the chastity of Lady Jo, the wife of Kang Ju-yeong. The document shows that some people in the country thought it quite natural that a widow should not remarry and should perhaps even allow herself to die and follow her deceased husband, under the influence of an extremely rigid teaching of neo- Confucianism.
