Hanseongdo (Map of Hanseong) illustrates the country’s capital in a landscape painting style. It focuses largely on the structures associated with the king, including the royal palaces, Jongmyo Shrine, and Sajikdan Altar, as do other maps of the capital. It also includes Chongyungcheong (a military unit), Yuksangmyo (a shrine holding the mortuary tablets of the seven concubines of kings of Joseon whose sons either became kings or were granted the title of king posthumously), administrative offices, and bridges. It also includes a shrine to Guan Yu, a general of the Shu Han Dynasty of China, reflecting Joseon’s admiration of the Ming Dynasty of China after it came to the country’s aid during the Japanese invasions of 1592 and 1597.
