Presumably, wooden strips, each containing a phrase from the Confucian scriptures, are put in this cylindrical case and the teacher randomly draws one of them out to ask questions of students. Eight trigrams and taegeuk designs are drawn on the lid. The characters written on the inside of the lid signify the names of the eight Confucian scriptures and the number of wooden strips.
