Arm rests like this one were used to support a person’s arms when they sit and lean back. This particular arm rest exemplifies the finest features of Korean traditional wooden furniture, in which function is perfectly harmonized with aesthetics. The top and bottom panel each have an elongated kidney shape. The soft curvilinear form is not only beautiful, but also practical, because it also allows the arm rest to comfortably support the person’s back. The two horizontal panels are supported by two decorative vertical panels and a central pillar, which has a unique shape of four twisted strands. The two vertical panels have a lovely openwork design of pine trees and a deer, so they look very free and unimpeded.
