In Korea the peony has long been widely praised for its voluminous and luxurious blossoms, and is regarded as a symbol of fortune and glory. Paintings of peonies were often mounted on folding screens, which were used for celebratory events, including banquets, by royalty, the aristocracy, and even the common people. The peony paintings mounted on this particular folding screen display white and red flowers in full bloom, accompanied by grass flowers and all forms of garden rocks.
