This hemispherical sundial was called an angbu ilgu or an angbu iryeong in Korean during the Joseon Period. This is a portable version of the sundial, complete with a compass. Its side marks the twenty-four divisions of the year in the lunar calendar and the elevation of the North Pole. The inscription on the bottom indicates that it was produced under the leadership of Kang Geon of the Jinju Kang Clan in 1871 (the 8th year of King Gojong’s reign).
