This is a version of the Saddharmapundarika Sutra (The Lotus Sutra) printed by the royal court. The Lotus Sutra is a basic scripture for the Cheontae Order of Korean Buddhism and the most widely distributed of all Buddhist scriptures. It was one of the fourteen books published by Queen Jeonghyeon to pray for the spirit of her daughter, Princess Sunsuk, in 1488 (the 19th year of King Seongjong’s reign), using the woodblock originally made to pray for the spirit of King Sejo and King Yejong in 1470 (the 1st year of King Seongjong’s reign). It shows an aspect of Buddhism in the royal court of the early Joseon Period.
