This painting portrays the legend that Xi Wangmu, or the Queen Mother of the West, spent time together with Emperor Wudi of the Han Dynasty or King Mu of the Zhou Dynasty at a party held beside the Jade Pond in the Kunlun Mountains, China. This type of painting was in vogue during the late Joseon Period. Copies of this painting were incorporated into ten-panel folding screens for use at celebratory occasions, such as wedding ceremonies and 60th birthdays, for people wishing to live long and happily, like deities.
