Copper coins, called haedong-tongbo, were issued in 1102 (the 2nd year of King Sukjong’s reign) to complement silver coins (eunbyeong in Korean), which were somewhat inconvenient when exchanging small amounts of money. The name of these copper coins was inscribed on the head in Chinese characters, while the tail was left blank.
