It is presumed that men also used a hairpin to fix their topknot. These U-shaped topknot pins were called buldujam, literally meaning “Buddha’s head hairpin,” because their head resembles the conch-shaped hair of the Buddha. During the Joseon Period, bridegrooms wore a manggeon (headband) after fixing their topknot using a buldujam on their wedding day.
