This black burnished jar looks glossy as a result of carbon permeation and polishing by a tool such as a bamboo knife. Black burnished pottery jars shaped like this are usually excavated at historic sites associated with the period when Hanseong (today’s Seoul) was the capital of the Baekje Kingdom, such as Mongchontoseong and Pungnaptoseong Earthen Fortifications. As such, they are regarded as the signature earthenware of the early period of Baekje.
