This portrait is said to be of Song Byeong-hwa (1852-1915), a Confucian scholar at the end of the Joseon Period. He is depicted kneeling down on a flower-patterned mat, dressed in a scholar’s hat, called a jangbogwan, and robe. Many brush strokes were applied to the face to create a more realistic three-dimensional effect.
