An iron gong was used as a ritual instrument in a Buddhist temple to call people to prayer or to warn them of an emergency. Such gongs were mainly made of bronze, and made a ringing sound when struck in its middle area, like a drum. According to the Chinese characters inscribed on the side of this iron gong, it was produced in 1301 (the 27th year of the reign of King Chungnyeol of the Goryeo Dynasty) by a craftsman with the family name Jeong, and commissioned by a religious community led by Lady Mun, before being offered to Cheongunsa Temple.
