This is the epitaph of Choe Ham (1094-1160), a Goryeo envoy who visited the Jin Dynasty of China to celebrate the Chinese Emperor’s birthday in 1140 (the 18th year of King Injong’s reign). A total of 1,443 Chinese characters in 44 lines were engraved on a horizontally lengthy rectangular plate. A space exists in front of the terms related to the Goryeo royal court in an expression of respect, while there is no space before the terms relevant to the royal family of the Jin Dynasty.
