This white porcelain jar decorated with Korean plum flowers, bamboo, and birds painted in cobalt blue evidences a transitional phase in the development of blue-and-white porcelain in Korea, during which the predominantly cobalt blue designs exchanged the complexity and luxuriousness of Chinese origin for the simplicity and austereness which eventually came to characterize Korean blue-and-white porcelain wares. The central motif exhibits a thicker and more vibrant blue, whereas the auxiliary motifs decorating the lid, base, and mouth are marked by a thinner, paler blue, leading to a three-dimensional, more realistic effect. The refined brush strokes capturing the images of the bamboo, bird, and plum jar attest to the artistic sensibility of Korean people.
