This gilt-bronze Buddha statue represents the earliest style among the Buddha statues discovered in Korea and closely resembles the early Buddhist statues made popular in the fourth and fifth centuries in China. It provides us an idea of how Buddhist statues may have looked when the religion was first introduced to the Korean Peninsula. The pedestal inscribed with a lion and the Samadhi mudra hand gesture are commonly found in early Buddhist statues produced in China.
