Jeong Seon (1676-1759, pen-name: Gyeomjae) was a painter of the late Joseon period who worked in the novel genre of true-view landscape painting. This painting depicts a winter scene of a person on a donkey crossing a bridge named Pagyo, or Baqiao in Chinese. Such a snowy mountain scene is a famous motif related to a Chinese poet named Meng Haoran who crossed the Baqiao Bridge in Shaanxi Province in search of plum blossoms in winter. It embodies the noble spirit of scholars who refuse to surrender to difficult circumstances.
