Portraits made during the Qing Dynasty of China, including this one, commonly exhibit a highly realistic style due to the adoption of Western painting techniques. The subject is known to be Yuan Shikai (1859-1916), a Chinese military leader at the end of the Qing Dynasty. He is sitting on a chair covered with a tiger skin. Three-dimensional effects can be seen clearly in the use of light and dark to express the subject’s face.
