The most impressive feature of this celadon jar produced at the Longquan (龍泉) kilns is the deft vertical ribs lining the lid and body. The rim of the lid is ruffled to resemble a lotus leaf, and the knob on top is shaped like a lotus stem. The exterior surface shows a dark green color from the glaze, but the bottom of the jar and the interior of the lid are unglazed, revealing the red base clay. Jars in this form were first produced in the Longquan kilns during the Song Dynasty and continued on into the Yuan Dynasty. This jar is characteristic of examples produced during the Yuan period. The walls are thick and the base was made separately and attached to the body. This jar was one of a number of ribbed jars in various sizes that were salvaged from the Sinan shipwreck.
