These portraits of Yan Zhenqing (顔眞卿, 709‒785) and Meng Jiao (孟郊, 751‒814) are included in the painting album of figures from the Tang Dynasty. The portraits are presumed to have been created based on the illustrations and information on such figures from An Illustrated Encyclopedia of an Eminent Standing in the History of China (三才圖會, Ch. Sancaituhui). Yan Zhenqing was a loyalist who suppressed the rebellion of An Lushan (安祿山, 703?-757), and was also renowned for his vibrant, fleshy calligraphy style known as “Yan Zhenqing style.” A poet of the mid-Tang period, Meng Jiao devised a unique antique and solitary poetic style while living in poverty. On the right-hand page of each spread, a biography of the figure is written in seal script.
